Born in Lusaka, Zambia (Africa), Nina's interest in mantras stems from her Indian heritage where the power of the mind is taught at a very early age through chanting mantras. Her earliest and fondest memories were of summers in India where her grandmother and she would go to kirtan and chant mantras in the morning and before bedtime.
After moving to Los Angeles at the age 12, Nina continued to practice mantras on occasion but grew increasingly interested in mediation and yoga after reading “An Autobiography of a Yogi" at the age of 19. At 25, she married her soul mate and moved to Houston, Texas. Her dedication to mantras increased with the demands of life and she attributes her success with love and her career to the power of mantras.
Her transformation to Mantra Mom happened upon the sudden death of her grandmother in Spring of '07. Filled with guilt and sorrow, she realized that her children would never benefit from their great-grandmothers heritage. At the same time, she was feeling a sense of “What is my purpose in life?” what she calls her spiritual awakening.
She resigned from her high-profile executive career and embarked on a search to find truth. She read countless books on mantra mediation and talked to Gurus. She started teaching mantras to her children, as her grandmother did with her. Being a busy mom, she put together a cd with specific mantras for her children and played it during their morning commute and at bedtime. “I immediately noticed my children becoming more at peace with themselves and the world around them," says Nina.
Later, her friends wanted a copy, and her neighbors etc. So, she decided to produce a cd that she could share with the world. Without knowing anyone in the music industry or even how to get started, she believes the power of mantras guided her to the right people that helped furfill her vision.
Nine months in the making with two months of intense labor pains, “Mantras for my children...and Yours: Sanskrit chants to calm active children,” was born on Mother's Day-May 8, 2008 weighing in at 2.6 oz, in dedication to her late grandmother.
The cd is a perfect expression of Mantra Mom, combining her love of Bollywood, hip-hop and new age music to create a unique and simple method of teaching ancient Sanskrit mantras that appeals to children of today’s generation.
Today, Mantra Mom devotes herself full-time to the cause of increasing awareness of mantras. She holds kirtan every other Sunday and is a contributing writer for Sabse Bada Rupaiya magazine, a lifestyle Indo-American magazine. She lives in Houston, Texas with her two sons: Jaidan, 5, & Kalel, 3 and husband of nine years. She practices yoga, mantra mediation, energy dancing and is a Reiki Master.
